WiFi security a concern for Business users
Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 09:19 In probably a good example of an overall lack of clear information on the security issues surrounding the use of public WiFi networks, vnunet.com reports on the concern of business users of WiFi. According to new research from iBahn over half of business travellers have concerns over the security of WiFi when use public WiFi hotspots in airports, hotels, railway stations and coffee bars. Other research conducted by Gartner suggested that a sixth of business travellers in the US and UK out of the 2,000 surveyed didn’t use WiFi hot spots because they were worried about security.
However the iBahn survey results show the universal acceptance of WiFi technology as despite these security fears, 68 per cent of respondents say they own a WiFi-enabled device, which they use on secure wireless networks, while a further 21 per cent plan to buy one in the next year.
I believe that companies can mitigate a lot of the risk by ensuring that their staff have a clear understanding of the issues, the appropriate behaviours and use of technology when connecting via public WiFi.
For all users thedigitalcloud plans to provide a brief overview of the issues with respect to WiFi security and some best practice to mitigate the risks of the technology.
